Sallie Mae Not: What’s Next?

A Letter & Plea from Filmmaker Mike Camoin:

This past week our film made its US premiere at the Whistleblowers Summit &

Film Festival and won the Audience Choice Award announced on National

Whistleblowers Day.  I'm so proud of our team and the people who have

contributed to make our documentary series come to life. We all pushed through

months of Covid, allocating unemployment checks, working on a shoe-string

budget to create SALLIE MAE NOT.  We believe when people see our film, it will

help be a catalyst to changing the broken student lending system.

5 years ago I was introduced to Alan Collinge and his book The Student Loan

Scam. It changed how I looked at going to college and my Country. I've since

met and interviewed whistleblowers like consumer advocate Ralph Nader, Sallie Mae’s former board member Catherine A. Fitts, former Board of Ed researcher and NY Times whistleblower Jon Oberg, Rolling Stones' Matt Taibbi, former IMF financial analyst Bob Hildreth, Wall Street Fraud Investigator, Tom Borgers and presidential candidate Jill Stein. I’d like to thank the dozens of borrowers who shared their heart wrenching personal stories of student loan debt, some of which have been carrying it for decades and well into retirement. This made me even madder and more determined!

Education is the big equalizer and WE THE PEOPLE, cannot lose this fight, especially when one year of "going to college" now costs nearly $100k--you know

something's wrong.  We must fix it.  IF we lose, our children and grandchildren will carry this burden for their lifetimes.  There’s more that we need to do to complete the series, yet right now, I need to ask you to join us to help create change. Here’s how:

* WATCH via LIVESTREAM Tuesday, August 3 at 10:00 AM EST the Senate Judiciary Committee headed by Sen. Richard J. Durbin (D-IL) holds a full committee hearing on Student Loan Bankruptcy Reform.  This is a HUGE deal because the Senate panel last held a hearing on the matter in 2012.

* LISTEN to The Ralph Nader Radio Show with Chicago attorney Anthony Fiorentino about his role in Sallie Mae Not and the various class action lawsuits he has filed on behalf of student loan borrowers across the country. Nader and Fiorentino, both featured in the film

* DONATE we have 5 more episodes to complete equally stunning, if not more, than SALLIE MAE NOT. Every donation to The Final Phase matters.

* SIGN your name to a petition! Our film’s main champion, activist Alan Collinge,

founder of StudentLoanJustice.org launched a petition that has reached over

one million signatures calling for President Biden to reinstate bankruptcy protections and/or student loan cancellation by executive order.

We’ll have more to come and are in deep gratitude to everyone who has supported our film throughout the years of production.

Sincerely,

Mike Camoin, Filmmaker
